ALA Core Competencies

The ALA Core Competencies are a critical component of any education in library science. The competencies prepare students to enter the field of librarianship by providing a comprehensive look at the ethics and standards of the profession. The ALA core competencies are crucial for school librarians because they ensure a high standard of professional practice, promote professional development and learning, and emphasize the integral role that librarians play in the educational success of students. They provide a strategic roadmap for excellence in the field, ensuring that school librarians are well-equipped to serve their communities. The following eight sub-pages will provide examples of my work product which reflect each of the standards.
